Hiroshima

The first atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima in 1945, destroying everything in a 2 km radius. Visiting the various memorials and the Peace Memorial Museum is a must, in my opinion. One of my favorite gardens (listed below) was reconstructed after the war.

If you can manage a daytrip out to Miyajima (also called Itsukushima) island, I highly recommend it. A 1-hour train ride (hmm, a little less, I think), pleasant ferry ride, and an island to walk around and explore.

Also, if of interest and within your budget, check out my brief summary of Sekitei. A traditional Japanese inn that was so hospitable, relaxing, and a treat. About 1-hour southwest of the city.

Notes
It was many years ago, but I feel like this place was US$100 per night. Right in the middle of the city, I walked everywhere when I wasn’t working… well, except for the daytrip to Miyajima. Had a great view of Hiroshima Castle; very comfortable.

A ryokan about an hour southwest of Hiroshima. Very elegant. Price is justified, but high enough that I was consciously treating myself. SO much food with each meal and so incredibly tasty. A very relaxing stay. I arrived late one night so I stayed two, so that I could fully enjoy / relax for a day and it was amazing.

Small cafe with such a welcoming vibe; off the main path from what I recall. Great place for a break.

Didn’t make it to this place, but had marked it as a potential stop. If you check it out, let me know!

I had the most amazing cold, spicy noodles here. Just writing about it makes me want to go back.

Okonomiyaki. As I didn’t know what I was doing, they kindly helped me cook and it was very tasty.

Stumbled across this garden while perusing Maps for places to wander. Photogenic, chill place to spend the afternoon.

War memorial of a Hall that was destroyed in WWII.

Highly

Sculpture that is a memorial to children who died in the atomic bombing.

Highly

Memorial park, advocating for peace.

Highly

Heavy content, but one people should experience. Exhibits and artifacts that document the atomic bomb blast.

Highly

A giant torii gate that sits on the water during high tide. An all-day daytrip, but I got to see it at low and high tide. Take the train to Miyajimaguchi and then a short ferry ride (which was very nice!) to Miyajima island.

Highly

Buddhist temple that’s a decent distance, but easy walk. If you’re visiting Miyajima for the day, then check it out. If you need to save time, I would prioritize getting to the ropeway

If time allows

On the way to the ropeway, a park that is nice to stroll through with many maple trees.

Highly

A small car ropeway (think gondola) up to an observation deck. There was more light hiking stairs than I expected. Nothing bad, but I’m a whiner. Amazing views from the observatory, though.
